Funny enough, way back in my early teenage days I unintentionally entered a beauty pageant-Mr Valentine. I vividly remember this. Little did I know that I’d make it to the top five. Ahem…perks of being free spirited! If you ask me, the judges got intimidate by my customized outfits, i went gagaz and made my outfits unique all in red and white colors. Anyways, that’s a story for another day.
Moving on swiftly, In the east of Johannesburg at Two Tone Lounge the 3rd of october was held another prestigious beauty pageant Miss and Mr Gay Daveyton 2014. The pageant have categories for both drag queens and drag kings. LGBTI community at large had a blast along with 23 LGBTI constants in total, including only 6 Lesbians who battled for the title Mr Gay Daveyton 2014.
There were variety of great prices up for grabs including a Modeling Portfolio proudly sponsored by Zanele Muholi. Amongst all, top 3 Miss Dayveton winners walked away with a Designer Dress by Elsie Menu whilst Mr Daveyton won a stylish Blazer also by the same Designer.
“Miss and Mr Gay Daveyton is all about celebrating ourselves, being feminine, gay moreover it’s our way of installing activism in our community. Homophobic people need to know-we’re not going anywhere and we’ll keep on having such events until their phobia is healed.” -says Lesiba Mothibe.
Lesiba Mothibe was titled Miss Gay Daveyton a decade ago. After ten years of being a LGBTI ambassador holding the little, she then decided to continue the legacy of miss gay daveyton by hosting it last year and committing to it being an annual event. Nomusa Sello, the founder of this beauty pageant gave her the blessings . This was a remarkable friday night not only for the winners nor LGBTI community but for the daveyton residences at large.
