Couple months ago I wrote an article about how being who you are can benefit you. Click Here if you missed it. Today I’m introducing to you an amazing individual who is a good example of how life turns out if one truly believe in themselves.
Here’s another thing about me, i absolutely refuse to ignore amazing people. People who strive for a better tomorrow, people who live their lives fearlessly. These are the type of individuals who inspires and keep me motivated. Some time last week during my Tweeting Session, I met Thiart Li. A South African Actor, Singer, MC and Voice Over Artist based in Johannesburg and Pretoria, Gauteng.
“I’ve Accepted my Sexuality and
Embracing every moment of it, just.
to be Who I Am.” (Says, Thiart)
In 2012, Thiart graduated at Tshwane University of Technology where he obtained his N.Diploma in Drama and Film. He was rather a more involved student because during his studies he was involved with various productions such as Medea, Die van Aardes van Grootoor, Corpus Christi, Jong Dames Dinamiet and Singer/Soloist for Pygmalion at the Breytenbach Theatre.
While doing his third year at varsity, he amazed many by bringing his very own One-Man Show “Classic Hits Originals”, to stage where he brought tribute to some of the biggest music stars as well as perform some of his own compositions. In 2012 he made his first professional debut in the stage production
“Ester die Musical”, working alongside the likes of Joe Niemand, Nadia Beukes, Melissa Bam and Matt Stern.
Singing his heart out, in 2013 Thiart officially started his career. Signing with Contractors Artist Management, and starring his First Music Video for the new Afrikaans group “Cortina”. RSG, a popular radio station hooked it’s listeners by airing his first original song “Vanaad”. The talented Thiart went on to work on Rockville2069 with the music Director, Bryan Schimmel.
He later made his appearance in his first Children’s Production: “The Frog Prince and other Tales” under the direction of Jill Girard and Keith Smith. Portraying various characters from childhood stories.
Shortly after he formed part of the project for a new Afrikaans CD: Alles Afrikaans. The CD was released on the 8th of November and available for purchase in music stores. He does a afrikaans rendition of Pharell’s hit: Get Lucky, now known as “Vir n Kuier”.
He then toured to Dubai in December 2013, playing Beast in Barnyard Theatre’s production “Beauty and the Beast Pantomime” and a South African shortly after returning from their international tour.
He has recorded various songs of his own and covers.
Thiart also created an alter ego/personae in 2009 called Shenay O’Brien, keeping his eye on the goal of breaking through into the Corporate/Entertainment industry, offering something completely different to take the industry to a whole new level. Following in the footsteps of Evita Bezuidenhout and Cathy Specific. Shenay has performed at various events, theatre shows (Vellies and Feathers, Vintage Varga Girls at Monte Casino) and is an MC as well.
I just thought it would be great for you to meet Thiart Li. It’s not everyday one meets such amazing people. I then felt curious to know more about him.
Read our Q&A below:
Where did you grow up?
I grew up all over SA, moving about every 2/3 years. I’ve lived in all the provinces except KZN and Eastern Cape. I’ve been to 5 primary schools and 3 Highschools. Adjusting was always an issue for me, as I felt that I could never find “my feet” and ground myself.
Tell us about your sexuality.
I am gay, but not on the “gay-scene”, I’ve accepted my sexuality and embracing every moment of it, just to be who I am. It’s difficult in the industry to completely be truthful, honest and sincere and for people to be accepting of who you truly are. Although I haven’t had any major conflicts regarding my sexuality and work.
